Bernie Krause The Great Animal Orchestra

45 €

The Great Animal Orchestra was commissioned by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain as an immersive installation in 2016. London-based studio United Visual Artists (UVA) imagined a visual translation of Bernie Krause’s soundscapes, allowing to listen to sounds and visualize them simultaneously. They designed a three-dimensional electronic installation, which is akin to the detail and complexity of a musical score, transposing the data from the recordings into light particles, thus highlighting the beauty of the sound environments presented. Their audiovisual experience offers an immersive journey through seven territories recorded by Bernie Krause, chosen for their ecological diversity and the richness of their biophony, from Canada to the Central African Republic, from the United States to Zimbabwe, from Brazil to the oceans.

These vinyl records gather Bernie Krause's soundscapes, along with illustrations and descriptions of the uniquee bio-acoustic recordings and the environments they were captured in.

Two x 180-gram heavyweight records, housed in a bespoke gatefold sleeve, with inner sleeves and inserts.

Bernie Krause

Since the 1960s, Bernie Krause has traveled the world recording and archiving the sounds of marine and terrestrial organisms and their unique habitats. His natural soundscape collection consists of more than 5,000 hours of complete habitat recordings consisting of over 15,000 identified species. Working at various research sites, he identified the concept of biophony based on the relationships of individual creatures to the total biological soundscape. His discoveries have helped form the basis of the new scientific disciplines, soundscape ecology, and ecoacoustics. Currently, Dr. Krause devotes his time transforming his field data into large scale works of sound art for public spaces such as The Great Animal Orchestra and The Night Would Not Be Night Without the Cricket (for the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, in 2016 and 2025). Bernie Krause is also the author of three books: The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 2012), Voices of the Wild (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2015), and Wild Soundscapes: Discovering the Voice of the Natural World (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2016).

United Visual Artists

United Visual Artists (UVA) is a London-based collective founded in 2003 by British artist Matt Clark. Its diverse body of work integrates new technologies with traditional media such as sculpture, performance, and site-specific installation. Drawing from sources ranging from ancient philosophy to theoretical science, the practice explores the cultural frameworks and natural phenomena that shape our cognition, creating instruments that manipulate our perception and expose the relativity of our experiences. Rather than material objects, UVA’s works are better understood as events in time in which the performance of light, sound and movement unfolds.
